Drune is a new spectacular-looking cyberpunk city in Second Life that's now open on the island of Lyme: Click here to teleport. Created by veteran sim builder Hera (Zee9), it's an exercise in optimization, because it's built on an SL Homestead sim, with far less prims available than a standard sim:
"I have built many sims before over the years but always had 15000 prims to play with," Hera tells me, "Even then I though this was never enough. So with only 5000 on a homestead, which is all I can afford, I was not sure it was even possible." It took four weeks to create, with one false start: "I half built it and then realized to make it work I was going to have to plan it much better so I deleted then and re-started."
Unlike many cyberpunk sims, this one pops with quite a lot of color. The first inspiration is one you've probably guessed already, but another is more recent:
Hera (pictured)
"I am a very long time fan of Blade Runner, which shows all over the build. But I was recently completely re-inspired by Altered Carbon on Netflix which I adored. Anyway I haven't built a full sim for a few years and I thought I might give it a go again."
Created in Blender and Photoshop, it may inspire fellow creators by showing what's possible with limited prims to work with:
"The limitations of a homestead have been a great learning experience I have learned to never give up when it comes to optimization, there are always a few more prims you can squeeze out if you just keep looking and don't mind to keep re working meshes over and over again."
Here's the teleport again. Content warning: It is a decidedly Adult-rated sim, Hera says, so you might run into some porny sights if like Rick Deckard you explore too deeply into buildings where you're not necessarily invited.
"It is not like the average adult sim where there are just straight porn shots pasted on the wall. I would say it is more 90% suggestive rather than pornographic," Hera explains, adding with a grin: "I try to be tasteful even in my most un-tasteful creations."
This buildis so good. And really framerate friendly for VR. I have had a great time exploring.
Do not understand why there is no VR wiever for SL. But VorpX and Firestorm with the right settings makes places like this so much fun.
