Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
One of the most common complaints from men in Second Life is the lack of clothing and events that cater to them. Some defend the lack of options as the natural result of men’s disinterest in fashion, but that reflects a reality more than twenty years in the past and not the current reality where the growth in menswear outstrips the growth in womenswear. Men in SL are interested in fashion, and thankfully, there’s a cohort of talent male fashion bloggers to guide their way.
Ian Dark blogs at El Eterno Resplandor. His pictures are casual, slice-of-life photos–a man enjoying himself about town and SL. I like his attention to the background. His style is very casual and relaxed, but he gives his pictures life with well thought-out settings and vignettes with him surfing, playing basketball, and just having a good time.
Roy Mildor blogs at his eponymous blog. All his blogs are titled with inspirational quotes such as “Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent……!” His photos are varied, from portraits such as this one to gorgeous black and white photo that opens this article. He is experimental, trying out different styles, black and white, color, and experiments with light, action shots, portraits. His photostream is fun and filled with variety.
Many more metaverse males below!
I adore the retro vibe in Murilo Tempest’s photos for his blog, Tempest Fashion Closet. His photos have the look of vintage pictures. There’s a sharp, defined look to his photos that I love. They are action shots, pictures of living in SL while beautifully styled. I think he uses a filter that gives the pictures and HDR appearance because they are so very defined and sharp.
Then there is microblogger Till Hapmouche. I love his style, not just in his photos, but the originality of his fashion styling. He is less interested in looking casual and far more interested in exploring the weird and wonderful possibilities of SL. His pictures are mix of head shots, black and white and color, high fashion and costumery. It’s a lot of fun thanks to his witty pictures.
Another witty microblogger, Kai Wirsing likes to play with the frame, diagonals rather than verticals, for example. His pictures are complex, the background an integral part of the story. He’s telling stories with his pictures and they are bold stories, colorful, and full of energy.
Craig William is a sassy blogger whose blog is called My Digital Mirror. He doesn’t mind looking a bit foolish to tell his story as in his “Clumsy in the Kitchen.” His style ranges from casual chic to casual kink and you can tell he is having fun every minute of it.
Lastly, there is Broderick Logan who blogs at A Gentleman’s Game. Many of his photos are with his partner Ena, telling the story of their romance. He includes links to songs that express the mood of his photos, but the music is not embedded, thankfully. Sometimes he tells little stories with his photos. I love how he can focus on small details such as this picture with the shoes that tells a story with very little.
These are just a few of the many men who are promoting men’s fashion and lifestyle in SL. There are many more and they are a good counter to the myth that men don’t care about fashion.
Cajsa Lilliehook joined Second Life in 2007 and has been enjoying the art of SL ever since. Disliking the common practice of critiquing poor photos, she decided to highlight good ones and explain why they work in hopes of inspiring with praise instead of criticism. Follow Cajsa on Flickr, on Twitter or on her blog.
Great post, and thank you so much for the honor :)
