Click here to apply to test Google's Project Steam. What is that? This:
The idea of streaming such graphically-rich content that requires near-instant interaction between the game controller and the graphics on the screen poses a number of challenges. When streaming TV or movies, consumers are comfortable with a few seconds of buffering at the start, but streaming high-quality games requires latency measured in milliseconds, with no graphic degradation.
Regular NWN readers will remember when OnLive was even able to run such a service with Second Life (which is not only graphically-rich, but graphically non-optimized) and run it well... but then went defunct and was sold to Sony in 2015. I'm interested to see how Google deploys its own service. The Internet giant is testing it out on the latest Assassin's Creed game, which may be a mistake: With OnLive and other streaming services, I've experienced a very slight delay in responsiveness that would be a significant in twitch games, where split seconds matter. Anyway, watch what it looks like in this video below:
Yeah -- so visually impressive, though I'd want to see how it performs during highly granular twitch combat!
Hat tip: Patch Woolhara.
