Quiz: How Many Virtual Humans Can You Correctly Identify?

The quiz uses virtual human faces generated from an automated process called GANS, created by nVidia, then seeds them among photos of actual people. I rolled my eyes before taking this quiz, expecting the avatars to be obvious... but then only guessed 3 out of 6 correctly. This handy guide for picking out the virtual from the real human was helpful, and helped me raise my hit count to... 4 out of 6. 

Here's one non-obvious "tell" for virtual people:

Messy hair

This is one of the quickest ways to identify a GAN-generated image. Typically a GAN will bunch hair in clumps, create random wisps around the shoulders, and throw thick stray hairs on foreheads. Hair styles have a lot of variability, but also a lot of detail, making it one of the most difficult things for a GAN to capture. Things that aren’t hair can sometimes turn into hair-like textures, too.

So perhaps ironically, good grooming is more indicative of humanity, not less. Much more here.

It was very difficult for me to identify the fake and real faces from it. Both are looking similar and we cannot find out any faults for the fake face.
