We talked a lot about Dual Universe last year, the upcoming, crowd-funded, single shard MMO, with some arguing that it was the closest thing we have to a metaverse -- so you'll want to watch the latest trailer above. Featured features include:
- Terraforming/mining
- In-game scripting
- Flight physics
- Community building
- Full voxel-based editing
- Multiplayer ship navigation
I recently had a long demo of Dual Universe with lead developer J.C. Baillie, which is what led me to call this "a fully immersive metaverse" in the title -- in other words, it's everything we associate with a "metaverse", but integrated within the Dual Universe narrative. More details on that soon, but meantime, here's a bit of what Will Burns says about Dual Universe:
Will first helped craft a definition in 2008, inspired by Neal Stephenson’s original description in Snow Crash, which IEEE adapted in 2013. “Now, if you type the word Metaverse into Google, it pops up with that definition from Wikipedia, which in turn cites the IEEE Virtual Worlds Standard group for it.”
... “Much as the semantics make me twitch, I think Novaquark is the only company I'd give a free pass to on that usage of Metaverse. Because you could always use that architecture not as a MMO space game but as a general purpose Metaverse architecture... with those other inclusions like a marketplace and currency system, etc. If they ever did, it would put literally everything to shame overnight.
“I'm not saying they are the Metaverse. But I will say they and projects similar have the best chance of actually evolving into it. Whereas High Fidelity, Sansar, etc, even Second Life or OpenSim...they likely aren't going to evolve into The Metaverse. The foundation was wrong and retrofitting them just isn't feasible without an architecture and presentation rewrite.
Make sure you have a compatible motherboard before you buy into this game. I bought in to the KickStarter early phase. I have a very powerful computer from my SL days it's just somewhat older now and there is a feature required by the game that is only in newer mother boards. So now I pissed away 50 bucks until I eventually get an upgrade, if I ever do.
