Pretty good Second Life vs. VRChat video infographics from Luca, who despite being an avowed SL enthusiast, plays it pretty fair, pointing out the faults/shortcomings of both along with their advantages. Basically Second Life is much more full-featured and has its own currency system that's exchangeable for US$, while VRChat is easier to access and better positioned for viral growth. (See final summation slide below.) I only caught two slightly off data points:
VRChat has quite a bit more concurrent users than this video suggests -- not 6,000 to 7,000, but in the last month, 7,000 to 10,000 on Steam alone. VRChat can also be played through the Oculus store, and given that 30% of the daily userbase reportedly use VR to access VRChat, it's likely that the grand total concurrency from both Steam and Oculus is more in the range of 12,000-20,000.
On a slightly more quibbly note, while it's true that Second Life doesn't have an official VR client, it does have at least two open source clients for VR, most especially this one for Firestorm. To quibble even further, there's a couple missing data points I'd love to see: Percent of furries in Second Life as compared to anime girls in VRChat.
Hat tip: /SecondLife, where a good conversation on this video is taking place.
Luca always makes good vids. One of the very few I actually follow (or whatever it is the kids today say).
