Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
I love Nefekalum’s photostream. Relentlessly inventive, exploring the boundaries of fashion and gender, Nefekalum’s photos are never boring. “Sweet as Honey” is beautifully constrained in its colors and has an initial impression of glamour, but with a closer look, the smears of honey taken on a transgressive feeling. There is a wildness there that is not obvious at first sight.
Nefekalum also has a love of the macabre which blog followers will soon discover. “|CerberusXing| Portrait" would be a fairly ordinary blog photo if not for the use of red and green projector lighting to highlight elements of the picture, creating visual interest and emotional appeal. Colors are not neutral, they come with cultural associations and red and green might suggest Christmas in December, but the rest of the year they can suggest passion, danger, demons, envy, and lust. They can be the spookiest colors.
"You got me actin' like the old me..." could be a standard wet tee shirt picture, but of course it it not. There’s the ever-present ears, the demonically black eyes, the tattoo crawling up the arm (or is it a tattoo) and tapering to visible veins. It has eerie elements that you will find in every one of the photos on Nefekalum’s stream, an always lively amalgam of glamour, fantasy, and the macabre.
Nefekalum’s photostream is a bold reminder that androgyny is fair more creative than menswear for women and pastel prints for me. June Singer said “Androgyny is not trying to manage the relationship between the opposites; it is simply flowing between them.” That flow between is very wide space and Nefekalum explores all of it.
