Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
“Dune Bunny” is a bit different from the majority of Scott Silverdale’s photostream as its touch of whimsy and puntastic title stand out from his more serious landscape and fashion photos. This playful side is usually expressed just in the titles, though humorous photos are sprinkled here and there in his photostream to show he is someone who looks at life with a twinkle in his eye. A surreal twinkle if you go by “Sing for Supper! Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” Nonetheless, even in whimsy his penchant for finding beautiful places in Second Life is evident.
“Salty Goodness” is more typical of his work, a beautiful landscape enhanced with a texture layer to give it a painterly feel. He has the sea meet the sky at three-fifths from the bottom and the lighthouse is three-fifths from the right. It seems as though his framing is instinctual, not exact, and he uses the boats to create a perspective in his landscape.
“Stolen Moments” is the picture that grabbed my attention and would not let go. He again uses the Rule of Fifths in placing the horizon at two-fifths from the bottom, a horizon created by the flowers that foreground the picture. Using a filter, he makes the picture look like a sketch and adds a texture layer to suggest the paper it was sketched on. He desaturates the colors but does not eliminate them completely leaving a wash of blue in the building on the left and green in groundcover. The people, like the colors, are barely visible, but they are there.
I like Scott Silverdale’s photostream a lot. He is experimenting, not content with finding one style of picture that works, but trying new things all the time. This adds excitement and surprise, something that is always good.
