Unity Labs developer Greg Madison created this seriously impressive Oculus Quest demo in which he mapped out* his real life apartment with a virtual, 1:1 scale recreation of that apartment -- including the flat surfaces. That way, if you're wearing the Quest, any surface can instantly become an interface for games or other interactive apps:
"While many of us spend almost all day in front of a table," he explains, "there are no apps/games taking advantage of this providential armrest.
"Seriously, Oculus Quest is a dream for Interaction Designers," he adds. 'XR first' is not so far away, every single app will be redesigned for alternative realities. At the opposite of sci-fi movies, we need designers who understand the transition phase. You can do augmented reality and mixed reality proof of concepts in VR right now!"
This is all true, and I'm just as impressed with the 1:1 recreation of his live/work area -- not just for creating XR proof of concepts, but just for making the Quest more user friendly. I.E., if you had a 1:1 recreation of your space running on the Quest by default, you wouldn't need to take off the HMD if you wanted to go into another room, get a glass of water, or, well, go to the bathroom.
*Update, 1/22: Greg elaborates on how he created this: "I mainly used SketchUp (IMHO best tool ever to go fast with precision) then Blender for minor corrections and UVs, and finally, Unity to compose everything."
