Last year I wrote about the ambitious Minecraft metaverse project of Kim Nevelsteen, a developer with a literal PhD in Mixed Reality, which enables users to jump from Minecraft world to Minecraft world through teleporters. (Watch above). Kim just let me know he's very close to making this project available to the public -- after some closed beta testing.
You can sign up to be a closed beta tester here, but here's some requirements from Kim on what he's looking for:
"I'm looking for beta testers for the server component. To be eligible, you must have an established public server; stable uptime and at least a handful of users. Currently only Ubuntu has been tested; but I'm willing to test other distributions, if they are not too far from Ubuntu. The server side MiM component does not affect the Minecraft installation at all, it is complimentary to it; the component is not even required to reside on the same server as the Minecraft server. The server component must, however, be publicly accessible via the net, if you are to have players teleport in. The server component has been written to fully support Minecraft version 1.12 (this means Java8 is required). Part of this beta will be testing against other versions."
More background from the sign-up page:
Currently only Ubuntu and macOS has been tested. I'm willing to test other Unix/Linux distributions, if they are not too far from Ubuntu. The server side (upstream) MiM component does not affect the existing Minecraft installation whatsoever, it is complimentary to it; the upstream component need not even reside on the same server as the Minecraft server. The upstream component must, however, be publicly reachable on the Internet via its defined address and port. MiM-upstream currently uses mcp940 (Minecraft v1.12), so Java 1.8 must be installed along side any other installations of Java you have.
Looking forward to seeing more video of this in action!
