Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Light and shadow is everything in Magic Marker’s work. Take “Influence,” for example. Without the shadows cast by this would be a nice headshot, but with the shadows, it has a moodiness and drama. It goes from a still picture to a story.
Shadow and silhouettes can express emotion so powerfully, as in the picture after the cut.
This picture is titled after a Charlotte Bronte quote from “Villette”. Lucy Stone is alone in the world sailing to Brussels to look for work, something Bronte did herself. On board the ship, she recalls Richard Lovelace’s “To Althea, from Prison” which ends with “Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars—a cage.” Lucy thinks this is true and adds “Peril, loneliness, an uncertain future, are not oppressive evils, so long as the frame is healthy and the faculties are employed; so long, especially, as Liberty lends us her wings, and Hope guides us by her star.”
This seems to capture this uncertain time as countries, states, and communities risk uncertainty as they re-open. We have all endured loneliness and uncertainty but still feel hope in the future. Her avatar is in silhouette in a digital artwork made with layers that create an impressionistic background. The allium suggests hope as flowers do. In the language of flowers, allium means unity, humility, and patience. All useful virtues today.
Wow, at first glance I thought this was first life come to visit. SL pics often look more “real” in black and white, but this is a stunner. Also, the typo (if it is one) is hilarious. Even in this simple photo, light is important. The darkness on the right contrasting with the light streaming in from the left that leaves shadows on the wall.
Magic Marker’s photostream is worth visiting when you have time to do more than browse. So much of her demands its own time, not just a glance, but considered appraisal. It is not for work or around young children as there is some aesthetic nudity. Be sure to see how she employs lighting because it’s more than magic, it’s art.
