“Strength of Purpose” by Patrick Ireland drew me in because it gives us such a sense of serenity, something sorely needed lately. He includes a poem by PrttyBrd 2019 that is a sharp contrast to the picture’s projected beauty and serenity. The title is “yuppie backyard suburban silence or I would swim with the fishes but the pond is too small” which gives you an idea of its sharp wit.
His work is thought-provoking and there is more after the break.
Art can express deep insights into the human condition. In “Apathy,” Patrick portrays apathy as chains from which we must free ourselves. I cannot help but see it as a commentary on last week’s events. It seems the callousness of that man’s hands in his pockets while he was filmed casually murdering someone struck a nerve that broke the chains of apathy. The poem that accompanies this photo is Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”
It is difficult to choose from his many pictures. They are all thoughtful and well-executed. I chose “Dormant” because it is a little older and shows the continuity of his work. He uses overlays to add drama and texture, framing the subject, the tree with the woman as its root system. She’s white as though it is cold winter and there are no leaves on the trees.
A winter garden in an alder swamp,
Where conies now come out to sun and romp,
As near a paradise as it can be
And not melt snow or start a dormant tree.
Patrick Ireland’s stream is rich in beautiful and thoughtful images. Each is accompanied by a soundtrack and poem that enriches your experience. When you visit, you should have the time to linger.
