I recently received interesting new survey results from the development team of Blind, an anonymous messaging app for company staffers. When employees at top tech companies were anonymously asked whether they supported Trump or Biden in the upcoming election, the results were often more evenly split than Silicon Valley's reputation as a liberal bastion might suggest.
Here's the results from over 6000 respondents, divided according to their company affiliation:
While Salesforce, Uber, and Microsoft heavily support Biden in the high 60 percentiles, many other companies including Apple and Facebook support Biden in the mid 50s. Even more notable, Amazon, Google, and Cisco are closely split on Biden and Trump, within the 5% margin of error -- effectively making these massive Internet companies the swing states of the tech world.
Also notable: These results are much less left-leaning than the cities where these companies are based. In 2016, Clinton took 87% of the vote in Seattle (home to Amazon) to Trump's 8% -- while in San Francisco (home to Uber, Salesforce, and much of Facebook and Google), Trump only took roughly 10% of the vote.
Another important qualification: Roughly 70% of the Blind respondents in this survey are not eligible to vote, i.e. not US citizens. ("I think it's because tech companies in general tend to have more non-US employees," Blind's Fiorella Riccobono tells me.) However, seeing as many of these tech companies and their platforms exert a heavy influence on the election and how it's covered, it's important to know where their employees' support lies.
...and again you bring politics here! Aren't we having enough already of this uncontrollable trash?
