Geena Carminucci reminds us with "Friendsgiving 2020" that there is no need to isolate ourselves in our virtual world. There is no virtual COVID to ruin the day, so invite everyone you know over for a big Thanksgiving dinner. Besides, virtual turkey is never dry, virtual mashed potatoes are never lumpy, and virtual pie is never burned.
More Thanksgiving pics ahead...
Alanna reminds us that Thanksgiving is a celebration of survival and the harvest. Here the harvest bounty is for sale next to a field. When I was young and we would drive up to visit my uncle at Lake Kabetogama, I always looked forward to this roadside stand right by the farm where it was grown, but in addition to the table and sign, the majority of the produce was kept in an abri, a shelter dug out of a hill. It was cold and moist and lit with bulbs in Edison cages. I thought it was so cool and we always stocked up on rutabaga, another treat.
Rah Rehula brings us to the kind of decisions we are usually spared by getting our turkeys at the supermarket. This year I learned that the turkeys awaiting the annual pardon get put up in a hotel. Really, a hotel! Really, we in the US are a ridiculous people at times.
Thanksgiving 2020 is a challenge for us this year. The COVID pandemic is spiking and we are told to stay home and give up the family gatherings that define and mark the passing of the year, however we have a lot to be thankful for. There are three vaccines that promise next year we can gather in-person with safety. One thing we can do is celebrate a virtual Thanksgiving, posting here or on social media what we are thankful for and one special dish we might service this year, or hope to enjoy next year.
