A scant few weeks after I worried that Google's open sourcing of its excellent Tilt Brush VR app would lead the codebase to die the death that open source projects often do, I'm happy to say I was totally wrong: VR startup Rendever quickly created a multi-user version dubbed MultiBrush (available for Quest here), and it's already attracted a decent-sized community around it and other open source spinoffs of Tilt Brush:
"[We] have created one big community on Discord [via @IcosaGallery] with most people who are working on the open source TiltBrush part of it, and a main fork at the moment of Open Brush," VR artist Rosie Summer tells me. "We are all talking and collabing. Did a lot of play testing for the MultiBrush fork via the Discord. It’s a real exciting hub, and some funding doors have also opened to us too."
Rosie, as you will remember, is a master of solo TiltBrush art, and loves the experience in this new multi-user spinoff:
"Multiplayer Tilt Brush has been something that I have wanted for a very very long time," she tells me, "Even more so in these trying times! Just being able to connect with friends and have a paint jamming session together is so fun. I also hope to host a VR Bob Ross Party in the not so distant future." (That's her in TiltBrush in the video above with seven other people.)
MultiBrush also opens up more use cases for real world business:
"[F]rom a business perspective, I can now show my work to clients from inside the world itself, give them a guided tour around the piece, which is a revolutionary concept for my workflow! Opening the doors to new and fun virtual paint collaboration, like never before. So many possibilities!"
Hi, just wanted to let you know we discussed MultiBrush and made reference to your article in the following podcast, and linked to it in the liner notes. Thanks! https://completelymachinima.com/2021/03/04/season-1-episode-2/
