Is Aufwie Set to Be Second Life's Next Break-Out Pop Star?

Auwfie is a twentysomething singer who performs his own music in Second Life three times a week and, for my money, is destined to become SL's next break-out crossover pop star. With a distinctive, richly textured voice backed by a soundscape of vibey hooks (listen above and below), his style sits somewhere between, say, Radiohead and Ariel Pink.

Auwfie has actually been visiting SL on and off for over 10 years. "I started performing for people in hangouts just for the laughs, never really took it with proper seriousness," he tells me.

But the coming of COVID changed all that:

"The pandemic put me on a hard place by preventing me from performing in real life and doing any other type of musical activities," he says. "And that's when I started seeing it as an actual job and took a more professional approach." He now even has a manager, Dara, who promotes his shows in-world and on social media.

"I like to do a mix of my original songs and my own version of songs I love... [and] mix very well known bangers along with indie artist's hidden jewels and spread their name. As I think, getting people to know the kind of music I love is also a way of paving my own way and other artist's who are into the kind of music I usually do, which is indie rock, bedroom pop, Brit rock pop and the likes of that."

But he doesn't only visit Second Life to perform; as with many SLers, especially in these distractingly cruel times, it's also a way of managing depression and anxiety.

"Second Life," as he puts it, "was for me a valvescape to my real life struggles as I found it very hard to form strong social bonds while growing up."

Hearing his music, I have a sense his social bonds may start growing outward from Second Life quite soon.

There is no doubt in my mind that Aufwie is an intelligent performer, deeply-laced with sensitivity. When you listen to Aufwie singing, you *feel* his songs deeply. There are some classic songs I have heard him sing that I actually like more than the originals. That being said, it is actually his meaningful original music that I like the most.

Aufwie is my go-to artist when I want good, original and smart music in Second Life. I have no doubt that it will become the same for you as well. :)
