Update, July 2: Bumped up for viewing during the long holiday! Discuss in Comments below, and I'll nudge Adam and Philip to participate if they have time.
Appearing in his original Philip Linden avatar with a notably sparkly upgrade, here's a lightly edited cut of my fireside chat with Philip Rosedale and Adam Frisby on "The Metaverse as a Shared Imagination", hosted in Breakroom from Sine Wave Entertainment (a media partner to this blog). Yes, Sine Wave CPO Adam is the rabbit.
I'm highly biased but I think this was one of the most interesting metaverse conversations in quite awhile, covering the alchemy of user creativity, VR adoption, NFTs, and lessons that Second Life can teach the current generation of metaverse platforms.
Here's an annotated breakdown of questions:
- How do Philip and Adam define what a metaverse is? (:15)
- After 20-some years building metaverse platforms, what’s been the most surprising or humbling thing you’ve both learned about user creativity? (7:20)
- We’re currently celebrating Second Life’s 18th birthday; what are aspects of Second Life user creativity that newer platforms could better learn about? (11:05)
- Is imagination and creativity in the metaverse better spurred by a community-minded spirit, or the profit motive of selling in-world content? (13:40)
- Will metaverses always be a platform mainly for the very young, who have lots of time to be creative? The very largest, ROBLOX, is mostly used by teens. (18:55)
- How important is the adoption of VR headsets to inspiring more imagination in the metaverse? (24:10)
- Will cryptocurrency and NFTs help fuel imagination in current and future metaverses -- or hurt it? (30:03)
Adam, Philip, and Sine Wave CEO Rohan Freeman close on a provocative question posed by metaverse artist Dizzy Banjo, on how we might stop the social media giants from dominating social virtual worlds.
This was a really excellent discussion. There was so many ideas and thought provoking comments I started taking notes. Thank you for bring it this way.
