Blu Moonwall’s [Msblu Moonwall] Yennefer has all the bright, happy colors I associate with a “Manic Pixie Dreamgirl” but Yennefer has none of those qualities. Her gaze is intense and powerful, mesmerizing. She is fierce, a warrior, and just the opposite in every way from the fragile flowers of manic pixiedom. I love that Blu Moonwall is using bright and bold colors with fierce and powerful characters. She really commits with each and every picture.

OK, so maybe that was a bad pun, but I love “Toreador.” It’s another example of going all in on an idea. The hair, the fan, the pose. It’s the Paso Doble, the dance of the matador and cape. For a great introduction to the Paso Doble, this scene from Strictly Ballroom is a must. In this picture, she seems to be standing on a path in the Retiro in Madrid, where autumn color comes alive. I’ve only been there in the spring, but I can imagine the rich fall colors that bring a rich golden light behind her.
Commenting on “Helvete” Blu wrote “sometimes you just want to look like a scary badass.” Mission accomplished. Helvete is Hell in Swedish and Norwegian, so I am guessing this is Loki’s daughter Hel. I love that she gives us a barren landscape, the trees dead or dormant. Snorri Sturluson wrote about Hel in the Gylfaginning. Blu, I think, captured her well.
Hel he cast into Niflheim, and gave to her power over nine worlds, to apportion all abodes among those that were sent to her: that is, men dead of sickness or of old age. She has great possessions there; her walls are exceeding high and her gates great. Her hall is called Sleet-Cold; her dish, Hunger; Famine is her knife; Idler, her thrall; Sloven, her maidservant; Pit of Stumbling, her threshold, by which one enters; Disease, her bed; Gleaming Bale, her bed-hangings. She is half blue-black and half flesh-color (by which she is easily recognized), and very lowering and fierce.
Blu Moonwall’s photostream is fascinating. It seems as though every avatar is new and unique with a background that perfectly complements the idea or story she conveys. She is a blogger and provides credits directly in her picture descriptions. If you love new and unique avatars, definitely click her Follow button.
