“Me gusta cuando callas” is a picture by Pedro for a multi-artist exhibition in Second Life [teleport here] and an online picture book celebrating the poetry of Pablo Neruda. It is called “A Thousand Words” and challenges the artists to give a picture worthy of the words of Neruda.
Twenty artists came together selecting poems from Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair which is one of Neruda’s best-known collections.
The image above illustrates Neruda’s poem which begins, “I like for you to be still / It is as though you are absent / And you hear me from far away / And my voice does not touch you” -- and I think his picture is an excellent representation of that melancholy Neruda is writing about, when the loved one is silent and absorbed, but still within reach of a smile.

Ethan Lane chose “Here I Love You” and perfectly captures the lines, “ Here I Love You / In the dark pines the wind disentangles itself.” This lovely poem ends, “And as I love you, the pines in the wind
want to sing your name with their leaves of wire.” I can see this poem in this picture.
Bambi’s “Sometimes hurricanes of dreams still knock them over” is named after one line from Neruda’s “So That You Will Hear Me.” I like that she imagines the poet writing, knowing perhaps his words are heard by his beloved through her experience, not his. “Now I want them to say what I want to say to you / to make you hear as I want you to hear me.”
Everything about this project appeals to me. My love for Pablo Neruda’s poetry survived a college Spanish semester of reading and discussing nothing but Neruda. I love Second Life photography and this project includes work from many artists who have been featured here in the past.
The exhibit is lovely, you follow a meandering path through the woods with each picture displayed with the poem that inspired it. The exhibition ends November 21st, but you can enjoy it through its companion picture book. Participating artists are: Adi Frith, Adam Cayden, Ara Dethly, Bambi, Callie Hamelin, Chris, Ella Pavlona, Ethan Lane, Grace Ashwell, Hilaire Beaumont, June Fallon, Lam Erin, Lilt Chan, Murdock, Oceane Atheria, Pedro, Sare, Talula Shippe, Taylor Wassep, Trouble Dethly, Velvet Bunny and Wicca Merlin. You can also read more about it on Facebook.
