Tatlym Dejavu posted this heartfelt homage to author and activist Thich Nhat Hanh, who died January 22nd at the age of 95. While I am Solidly Secular on the Pew Research Center Religious Typology Quiz [click here to take] I find Hanh’s writing moving and his life inspiring. Like Desmond Tutu, he was an advocate for peace who worked to make life better. He also had some influence on art and the idea of wabi-sabi. He saw beauty in decay, a source for future growth. His passing leaves the world poorer. His memorial was on Wednesday and I was curious if any Second Life residents followed Tatlym’s example to honor his passing.

Anu Papp posted this self-portrait titled “In Peace” for a blog post [click here]. While her face is clean and unadorned, she is calm which is a good example of Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching, that living fully and happily is what gives life meaning. He wrote an entire book about it, “No Death, No Fear.” where he wrote, “You would not cry if you knew that by looking deeply into the rain you would still see the cloud.”
Those were the only memorial pictures I found, but there were several pictures inspired by quotes from him. I like the joy in this picture and think the quote is lovely. “Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”
One of the lasting contributions he made to the world is spreading the idea of mindfulness, a type of meditation that focuses you on the here and now. Since I became disabled, I use the exercises as a way to manage pain. Being a Solidly Secular person, I sort of rolled my eyes at first. But, consider the Bend Police Department where they added a fifteen-minute mindfulness meditation to their day shift. In the years since they began this, injuries and medical costs are down. There are 12% fewer citizen complaints and a 40% reduction in use of force. [The End of Bias, Jessica Nordell, click here] It has helped me and I am grateful for it.
