Remember Larry David's cryptocurrency ad for last weekend's Superbowl, where Larry kvetches his way through human history, always being wrong about great inventions and breakthroughs? It was funny!
Looking at the charts of two leading app trackers, however, it also had little or no impact on promoting downloads of the actual cryptocurrency app, FTX Crypto Exchange. Take a look:
According to Sensor Tower (see above), its overall ranking since Sunday is in the 500s and 600s, well below its recent peaks prior to the game. Performance on the iOS App Store was slightly better, but not by much:
According to Data AI (above), FTX Crypto Exchange briefly peaked into the top 20 of Financial apps on Super Bowl day, but has since dropped. (And has not cracked into the Top 100 Overall.)
In fairness to FTX Crypto Exchange, it already has pretty good download rates (over 5 million on Google Play alone) and the Super Bowl ad brought in a lot of awareness. But the startup likely spent over $10 million to produce and place the ad, which was seen during a sports event with over 100 million US viewers. Which suggests it's already hit a peak in interest.
Or maybe, the Larry David message that you're missing out on The Next Big Thing if you're missing out on crypto... doesn't really resonate.
But cryptocurrencies are wildly volatile and can have over 10% swings in price in a single day. Last year, a crypto called Dogecoin rose by about 15,000% and then quickly fell spectacularly in value.
