Sophia Reynolds brilliantly portrays the athleticism of dance in A Deal with God, a composite of four ballet positions. While her leotard is barely there, the shadows from the window framing is so solid it seems to clothe her more than her clothes. I love how some of the positions are more out of focus than the others, suggesting movement as well as signalling where her eyes are focused. I love the energy and the commitment she throws into her dance.

Breathe is the first in a series of three pictures. It portrays her falling down toward the water. I love the movement in the picture, her hair flying upward. I am, however, puzzled by where she came from. There’s nothing there for her to have slipped from. The trees are on land that is beneath her. I can rule out a dive because of her form. According to all the TV forensic analysts, people do not jump to their death facing backwards, so it’s not that. Besides, where would she jump or dive from? Did she jump out of a helicopter or plane to escape the bad guys? Perhaps she is the Woman Who Fell to Earth. I love how this picture poses a puzzle and has the dramatic energy to sustain our interest in that puzzle.
Keep Breathing has her in the water. Again, there is such movement and energy in this picture. I love how it is all a blue/black duotone. I love the light coming down through the water. Considering how flat she was falling, she clearly had the wind knocked out of her as she sinks into the water. The one thing she needs to do is keep breathing, a perfect title.
Let Go shows her after she has come back to the surface and is able to breathe. The title is more equivocal than the other two. What does she mean by calling it Let Go. Is that simply advice to save her energy for when she is closer to shore or is she giving up? We don’t know but the play of light on the surface, the sparkle of water suggests more optimism than anything else. So I choose the former.
I just discovered Sophia Reynolds when looking through the Bloom of Spring galleries. HEr stream is new to me and quite short, only thirty-one photos. Perhaps this is a new account because she shoots with a practice eye. Not one picture is humdrum. Her pics are dramatic and exciting, well-composed and confident.
