Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Mihailsk, on his Flickr photostream’s About page writes, “I don't see myself as an artist, I am a passenger with open eyes in this journey of life and Second Life…”
I wonder, isn’t that what an artist is? Someone with their eyes wide open who can capture those moments of grace and synchronicity that make our lives more beautiful. I love the feeling that this picture conveys, of a spontaneous revelation that just happened. It’s quite possible that this was very deliberately constructed, as many SL photos are, but it has the feeling of just falling into place. Mihailsk chose the song “Cycles” by Frank Sinatra [Click here] as a musical companion to this image. It seems perfect:
"There isn't much that I have learned
through all my foolish years.
Except that life keeps runnin' in cycles.
First there's laughter, then those tears."

“Only Sky” recalls the words from John Lennon’s “Imagine” -- “no hell below us, above us only sky.” Mihailsk includes a link to that song, making the association explicit. [Click here] He graciously provides a SLURL so you can check out this beautiful bridge for yourself. [SLURL] I love how this picture is desaturated, but not completely. The ghost of a color remains while the bridge seems to float in the air.
“Throw Red” reminds me of political propaganda prints. With the red flag and the poster-ized look it fits right in with that aesthetic. He associated this with a Greek song called “Throw Red” [Click here.] and thoughtfully provided a translation of the lyrics. A snippet from those lyrics says, “The news bulletin of 9 sells the land, that falls in ruins rejoices, But I still exist, I am still here. I take a breath and color, I fly in another orbit.” To be still standing in the ruins is a familiar theme in patriotic songs and imagery.
Mihailsk’s photostream is full of striking images, mostly of him in isolation, alone, alienated even. He provides his musical inspiration for his pictures and through them you can see he is very much engaged in the world even though his pictures are almost all of him alone and even though “Alone” was the title of a recent exhibit of his work. He may be alone, but he is still “a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”
