Here's the core slice of the Metaverse Universe chart just updated for Q1 2023 by longtime virtual world consultant Nic Mitham. (Click here for the full report.) Main takeaway for me is this is slow but substantial user growth from his Q4 2022 report, when the grand total across all metaverse platforms was 505 million MAU.
Now we're up 15 million monthly actives from late last year, though little or none of that growth is from the still-slender "web3" sector:
The Q1 2023 update of our virtually world-famous Metaverse Universe chart has just been published and we go into the new year with 520m MAU's, up 15m from Q4 2022.
Shown below is the segment containing Web3 browser-based virtual worlds. We expect casualties in this sector with too many worlds chasing too few users. Pro tip for the companies operating these new VWs - focus less on monetisation and more on the user experience.
More here from Metaversed LinkedIn page. "Browser virtual worlds", by the way, means either the world itself is displayed on a web browser (such as Decentraland) or has a heavy focus on its desktop/laptop client or portal (such as Roblox).
And as I've noted before, these are just the prominent platform leaders with strong usage in the US and EU, so it doesn't include mobile-based Garena Free Fire, which is mostly played in Southeast Asia and South America, and is estimated to be enjoyed by 1 in 10 people on the entire planet earth.
