Today's SL Flickr Pick: Amazing, Emotional Avatar Portraits by Aver Osk

Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting

Aver Osk has stunning avatar portraits that evoke strong emotions. “Hope flies away” is a great example. The dried, cracked lips, the drooping ash, all suggest a feeling of helplessness and despair. She’s not taking care of herself, something that happens when people think they don’t deserve good things like a bit of lip balm. What hope she has is pinned to her nose, not the place where hope can grow and worse yet, the pin is unsnapped, those letters are ready to slide right off.

“I feel this chaos in my mind” is brighter and more vibrant than most of her work, perhaps inspired by the art. I love how the hallway full of paintings frames her and the repeating of color in her shirt, hair, and the paintings. 

My bad, I nearly skipped over this 2021 picture because I thought she had a friend shoot a pic in RL. It’s kind of nice to know you can buy cold hands in Second Life. (Cold Hand Unisex from SAXO, to be exact.) That hair, though. I can’t tell what part of the picture fooled me the most. It’s really something. And you know it’s Second Life because there are some credits. 

Aver Osk’s photostream is a long collection of pensive, thoughtful, and perhaps sorrowful women. They show women in repose, thinking, contemplating, perhaps plotting. Many of them are extraordinarily lifelike and may send you checking to see if it’s really Second Life. It is.
