This is a pretty powerful tribute to the VRChat community and the creativity they've wrought on the platform thus far -- and as created and narrated by Raergur, the video expresses the essential appeal of the Metaverse ideal too:
Built by and for the community, by real people. This is the real Metaverse. I've met so many beautiful souls people I never would have met otherwise, now lifetime friends I deeply and genuinely love.
Inside, you meet the most diverse people from around the world, but yet can interact with them as if they're right there in the room with you... We all come from vastly different lives. And this diversity gives fruit to such amazing experiences.
It's a place where any idea can be made and shared. We get to escape into the world people dreamt about in their mind, explore them and get lost in the stories people want to tell. We get to touch the cathedrals people have built in their minds.
Profoundly put (and visualized). Somewhat surprisingly, Raergur was not an active virtual world explorer before VRChat, he tells me, and first came across it through various meme videos on YouTube. But he's now a deep denizen of VRChat, where he created an avatar inspired by his interest in werewolves, while forming fast friendships through the power of immersion:
Raergur's avatar in VRChat
"The virtually unrestricted nature of avatar creation in VRC lets people embody pretty much whoever or whatever they can think of, whether that's SpongeBob, a military operative, a wolf character, or just an idealized version of themselves. Just like clothing or decorating a house, it lets people present themselves in the way they want to be seen. Which can be a very personal/intimate form of self expression for some people."
This is also made possible by the breadth of strange and wonderful worlds within VRChat, which take them into a completely new context:
"[Y]ou are kind of thrown into social situations you wouldn't usually find yourself in during your every day life. Most of us don't go out to join a random group of 20 people to play a game. But with VRChat such a readily accessible experience, you are bound to talk to other people and make friends.
"Some people get a lot of anxiety when in social interactions too, but the interesting thing about VR is it's like wearing a mask. There is a layer of anonymity, which has its pros and cons. But I believe it helps those anxiety- ridden people open up more, because they are less afraid of being judged."
That includes Raergur himself.
"I do [get anxious] when it comes to singing and dancing in front of others. And I've done both multiple times [in VRChat] now. I definitely still get nervous but I'm still growing."
