Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Have guitar, will travel. Busking is a long tradition, though not always legal, and often strictly limited. In my hometown Portland, street musicians are much loved. Portland’s Elvis has played at Saturday Market for forty years!
And what about in Second Life? Well here is 理衣 -りぃ- with “Street Live” playing her heart out at public transit stop, a favorite place for buskers as pedestrians stop and wait long enough to be captured by the music.

“Well, fancy meeting you here” from Skye McLeod Fairywren is a delightful reminder that busking in Second Life can be very different. Could she be playing some Plastic Bertrand? I love how she takes something mundane and makes it anything but. She’s playing banjo, which seems very popular among SL buskers. I am always happy to see a banjo as my dad played banjo and sang in a band at barn dances and parties most of his adult life.
Grim war gives us the sad sight of a busker’s empty guitar case. In “Busker,” the empty case feels almost like a reproach. Hey, people, show a little love here. Generally speaking, buskers will seed their case with a few dollars so no one has to break the ice and be the first to tip. It also tells people that the busker is accepting tips, or perhaps, reminds people they should tip if they are enjoying it.
Busking can be fun and a person can make a living. It can also free people for extended travel. My great-niece busked with a friend around the periphery of the US, from Seattle around the peripheral states and back to Seattle over the course of several months. Of course, you have to have talent.
I created a gallery of buskers in Second Life and happily they vary widely. Skye’s mer-busker is not the only non-humanoid and they all seem to be having fun.
