Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
When I first joined Second Life, I bought a sailboat for 1 linden from Enkythings. I am sure I still have that boat. I passed hours upon hours sailing that boat on the Linden Ocean. I bought a fancier sailboat that responded to the Linden Wind and required a person to actually know what they were doing. I tried it once or twice and went back to my Enkythings boat. Still, I love sailing the Linden Ocean and am always facing the water. I found a Flickr group dedicated to sailing in Second Life and am in love.
Here is “Good Day on the Water…setting sail” from Benny Jets. Not only does B-B-B-Benny get points for a perfect Seventies reference, I love his use of a watercolor filter to create his excellent picture. Beautiful watercolors of water are so refreshing. With the smoke blanketing parts of North America and Europe, a lot of people are staying in, but Second Lifers can go out and about and enjoy the outdoor life without a respirator.

“Nordshore 01” from Vivena shows a cat perhaps looking longingly at the sailboat sailing by. Despite their aversion to water, cats have a long history of going on boats — at least back to Ancient Egypt.
If you want to cry your heart out, by the way, there is the wonderful book Mrs. Chippy’s Last Expedition by Caroline Alexander. I ended up selling my copy of the book because it made me cry every time I straightened the bookshelf. It’s about the cat on the Endurance, the boat with the most amazing survival adventure story of all time. Sadly, not Mrs. Chippy. And if you want to see this place for yourself, click here.
Waves have come a long ways since they were made of prims. “Kayak” from Clyde (Clydus) Essex is amazing. I love boats that put you right in it. Whether rafting down the DesChutes or canoe racing in the Midwest, I have always preferred the boats powered by humans. Perhaps it’s because speed boats are such a hazard for swimmers, but give me a nice paddle-powered boat any day of the week.
And since I am feeling bookish today, if you want the ultimate kayak adventure, consider The Sea Runners, a novel based on a true event when four indentured servants fled servitude in Russian Alaska and kayaked to freedom in Oregon in a scary, stay-up-all-night adventure.
Digital- Sailing, Ships & Boats in Second Life is a fabulous Flickr group. It is moderated so it’s not full of porn. It appeals to me in part because I grew up on the water (a lake) and swimming and canoeing are my favorite things in the world.
The group also speaks to my love of travel/adventure books which is why there are so many recommendations. I read hundreds of books about Antarctic, Arctic, and Greenland expeditions and mountaineering books as well. I’ve read dozens of books about sailing and canoeing from the adventures of a woman Shooting the Boh in Borneo to the gruesome voyage of TheEssex. It’s a joy to see that adventurous spirit alive in Second Life.
