> The most important term invoked was "Spatial Computing." The earliest reference I know of is from my former CEO, Robert Jacobson, Ph.D., and friends around 1992 in a company called WorldDesign. I have a slide that suggests we wanted to trademark it but never did. Does anyone have earlier references to update my chart?

Apparently the term "spatial computing" has been used in various meanings since the late 1950s: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?start=0&q=%2B%22spatial+computing%22&hl=en&as_sdt=0,5&as_ylo=1900&as_yhi=1991 . (I'm not sure which mentioning is close enough to the modern meaning.)

I think avatar is a far more appropriate term than persona. Rather amusing that someone named Avi disagrees.

Nice article - Avi is slightly wrong on one point though. The term "Augmented Reality" was coined by Tom Caudell in 1992. He was working with Dave Mizell at Boeing on one of the first industrial AR systems.

He used the term in a paper describing the system - you can read the paper here: https://tweakers.net/files/upload/329676148-Augmented-Reality-An-Application-of-Heads-Up-Display-Technology-to-Manual-Manufacturing-Processes.pdf

Ron Azuma used the term in a paper in 1993, and it well known for his survey of AR in 1997.

Just a small correction :)

Bob Jacobson

A fascinating recounting of a fascinating time and origin mythology. It was a privilege to be associated with so many brilliant creatives before we became affiliated with this or that intellectual special interest or commercial exploiter. I yearn for this innocence again within our community of explorers. Commercialization of what are essentially socially beneficial inventions and novel, noble ideas, is a travesty, the scourge of our times. Website: https://LinkedIn.com/in/BobJacobson
