The tool is good, but I wish it was part of the viewer too: newcomers may think they could use the same intuitive tool to customize their avatar again inworld, later. Instead, they have to rummage among "folders and files".

Non-human avatars: that's a good point. It would be better if they also add them. Also the implications on racism and sexism are interesting.
I won't exclude future non-human avatars: the previous iterations of starter avatars also included robots (well, still humanoid) and werewolves.
The point of these avatars, though, is to simplify the first user-experience, so it should be as simpler as possible. Maybe LL thought non-human avatars could add complexity and possible confusion: "Why can't I put this skirt on my werewolf?"

I made a new Avatar using the new mesh. It is a lot better. Only thing is there isn't a hud to use so you can wear other mesh clothing. Also, no matter what shape and skin even when modified the female version face looked too much on the male side. Other than that it's a great start.

A good start but yes, a huge mistake in going only with human avatars. If second life wants to survive long term they need to learn from VRchat and Roblox and market themselves as complementary to those. VRchat is popular because of avatar freedom from the start and because they support creatives with free "land" on which to build things.

Second life needs to take the risk and fully change their business model towards supporting creatives with land costs no more than creating a website. Their money will come from taxing item sales like they do now that these more numerous creatives will buy to populate their land. With this and better starter avatar creation they can then market themselves as the "easier VRchat" with more immersion due to the custom of using chat instead of voice to communicate. The more quality virtual experiences the more people will visit and a positive feedback loop will be established with some of those becoming creatives.
