Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Claire Vuissent’s depiction of Wuthering Heights character Catherine Linton is so magnificent, I didn’t have to glance at the title to know she was running “out on the wily, windy moors.” (Yes, I know this is the original but I prefer the cover.) Claire embodies the spirit of Cathy searching on the moors for Heathcliff. To be honest, I love the song, admired the book, but have always disliked Cathy and Heathcliff. They are not good people.

“Didn’t come but rains” makes me think that Edward Hopper should be outside with a canvas and a brush. Who’s to say he couldn’t have painted a record shop, if he found the time. Claire creates such painterly pictures, each one feels like a work of art. They feel considered, as though she thinks about every element in the picture, the framing, the lighting, everything. She also shoots from behind most of the time so her pictures suggest a sort of universal avatar, an Everyman who functions as a stand-in for the viewer.
“With sincerity” is another picture that makes me think of a painter. The light and the mood make me think of Andrew Wyeth. The sky, the field, it all feels very much out of a Wyeth painting. A lot of her work feels like it’s been painted because there is this stillness.
Even when her avatar is walking, there is this sense of contemplation, as though walking is a form of meditation as it is in Sufism. It’s extraordinary. It’s one of the infrequent pictures when she shows her face but doesn’t she still seem as though she could be of any time or place, still universal?
Claire Vuissent has a collection of pictures worth of exhibition in-world or in real life. Her work feels like a meditation, a peaceful silence. It’s really quite extraordinary and I am very grateful to Whiskey Monday for pointing me in her direction.
