Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
My first glance at Celestial Demon’s untitled picture of a man laying on the ground, I thought he was a boulder. But of course, a closer, slower look revealed a far more interesting picture. I love how he uses the body as landscape. It is his lighting that makes the body look so much more a part of the landscape, making the body more abstract. It’s reminiscent of Carl Warner’s Bodyscapes, an amazing exploration of the geography of the human body and Celestial Demon’s is as well.

“Once Again” is perhaps the most easily understood picture in Celestial’s portfolio. I know sometimes people think that the more opaque or obscure the underlying concept is, the more elevated the picture is, but I think it’s the opposite. Communicating with clarity is more difficult and requires more of the artist. They cannot just make something and say it means something. It has to communicate what it means without words and with clarity that makes it intelligible to most of the people who see it. And if you struggle with the intent, the artist has a narrative that speaks to the intent.
“Watereagle” fascinates me. I think it might be hard to swim with a fan, but it sure makes for a a striking picture. Again, my first glass did not perceive a person in the water. I saw a bird, technically I saw a swan, not an eagle, but then the picture resolves and I can see the person (or the demon if you want to be picky.) I love how Celestial makes the picture so stark, white and black with very little gray. The world through the eyes of a demon is stark, but beautiful.
Celestial Demon’s photostream is intriguing and beautiful. If there must be demons in our world, it’s a good thing that it is this demon. I wrote about Celestial Demon a few years ago and it’s so interesting to see the way the art changes over time.
