Poe-try: Small But Mighty Flickr Group Creates Second Life Tributes to the Works of Edgar Allen Poe

Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting

Liz Saenz’ “Whom the Angels Named Lenore” is one of many striking pictures in what will surely be the smallest group I feature. With only eight members, nine since I joined, Poe-try is dedicated to the great Edgar Allen Poe. We’re still in the penumbra of Halloween, so it’s now or never to feature it. This above is one of many pics paying homage to his most famous poem, “The Raven.” 

With the popularity of Poe, I found over 150 SL-based pictures honoring Poe, so there are a lot of people who should get busy, join the Poe-try group, and add their Poe pics.

Opal Starling’s “Spirits of the Dead” illustrates Poe’s poem of that name. It’s nice to see someone tackling something other than “The Raven.” This is definitely spooky. They seem to be standing vigil over their cauldron on a field of skulls. They sort of remind me of "Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble,” from Macbeth.

 

Willow Rylee’s Nostalgia comes from Poe’s poem “Romance.” This is a picture that is happy and colorful, a real outlier in the group, but it’s so fun. The line, though, is so clever, “And so, being young, dipped in folly, I fell in love with melancholy.” Don’t we all, at least for a while. 

While Poe-try has been around for a while, it seems to have been rediscovered last month and the majority of the pics are from 2023. It includes a couple AI pics as well. I hope that some of you will join. I bet you have some Poe pictures lingering in your stream that now have a place to gather with their kind.

VERY nice work. Going to a Poe-themed Speakeasy event soon, with reading and cocktails in an 18th Century tavern
