Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
I noticed there are a lot of pictures of Second Life users dressed up as Napoleon, or a simulacrum of Napoleon, just as Masa Plympton did here, showing off her "Emperor uniform" which recently went on sale in-world.
Of course, I did then search for “Napoleon” across my Second Life Flickr channels, though oddly enough, I found more pictures when I searched for “Emperor.”
He is a fascinating character to roleplay, isn’t he? Though many people may only think of him due to the new Ridley Scott/Joaquin Phoenix movie, he had such a profound effect on Europe, far beyond his conquest. He had judges rewrite the laws of France, establishing equality before the law. It was not just adopted in France, but also in several places he conquered, and it was very influential on Louisiana’s laws, making it the only state not using English common law.

Skippy Beresford pays homage to the Emperor and yet remains absolutely true to the little man and the grand ideas he presents in his pictures. “Great ambition is the passion of a great character,” the introduction to Napoleon’s full quote, “Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them.” I wonder what principles directed his invasion of Russia. After all, he had the example of Charles XII of Sweden to warn him away.
Terry Fotherington shows us the Emperor with the only enemy that defeated him - the snow. Denna Moore also snapped Napoleon in the snow. I find this history fascinating. So much so that a large 2*3’ framed picture of the invasion hangs in my real life living room. Hubris is Hitler following Napoleon following Charles XII following the Mongols - all defeated by the weather, though the Mongols lasted longer.
Langstrath Valley gives us a picture near the end when Napoleon’s arm has been decimated by the harsh Russian winter and starvation. It must have been bitter, because Napoleon won all the battles and made it all the way to Moscow, but Tsar Alexander burned everything, E V E R Y T H I N G! The fields of wheat and other food burned and his people starved, but so did the soldiers. Tsar Alexander burned Moscow. Napoleon sat in the ruins for a month waiting for Alexander to surrender, but he refused. In the end, deprivation forced the French to retreat.
Wolfie captures Napoleon in the Paul Delaroche painting “NapoleonI at Fontainebleau”, though Wolfie is younger and more fit, he captures the confidence and challenge in Napoleon’s pose.
Seb captures Napoleon near the end. It’s unclear if this picture depicts his exile to Elba or to St. Helena where he died from arsenic poisoning. Hilaire, who posed for Seb, still looks healthy, though despondent.
There are almost three dozen pictures offering Second Life-based homages to Napoleon, Josephine, or to his soldiers in a gallery I set up. If you would like your safe pictures to be included, just tag me.

I used to have a wonderful Hussar uniform in Second Life.
My time with my father was often refighting (wargaming) the battle of Waterloo and other Napoleonic battles.
