Leah-Marie snapped this candid photo of a St. Lucia Day celebration in Second Life in 2021.
Today is St. Lucia’s Day, a holiday popular with people from Italian and Scandinavian backgrounds, celebrating a saint who helped the persecuted while “wearing a candle lit wreath on her head to light her way, leaving both hands free to carry as much food as possible”.
I will be making traditional saffron buns because that’s what we do in my Swedish-American family. I suppose it was a church-state violation, but when I was growing up, the St. Lucia celebration was too big to be held in any of the local churches so it was held at the high school. There was always a parade of girls all dressed in white with one chosen to be Lucia.
I was curious if anybody else was celebrating St. Lucia in Second Life this year, and sure enough, I found three events. Two are at sex clubs, so I assume they won’t be traditional.
However, there will be a delayed celebration on the 16th that looks to be a bit more decorous.

Michael Romani shot this picture eight years ago. She is wearing the traditional white dress and red sash. Only one person is chosen to wear the crown of candles, so she’s kind of like the Homecoming Queen of the holiday.
Neaira Allegiere gives us a Santa Lucia from a more oblique angle. I like this picture quite a bit. It’s very simple, but it gives us an interesting angle, use of light and shadow, and a very pristine portrait of the Lucia.
I was surprised how few people show Santa Lucia Day pictures, but I suppose I’ve been lucky enough to always live in a community where it is celebrated. Like Second Life, Portland is celebrating on the 16th. Still, I am glad to see some celebrating. Now if only there were some saffron buns.
