Since Vision Pro reviews frequently bring up the problem of tangled and messy hair from wearing the head-mounted display -- it's even a key complaint in the much-read Verge analysis -- I asked an actual expert about the topic!
Isadora McKenna, an LA/Denver-based stylist, has been giving celebrities excellent hair for years, from Alanis Morissette to Billie Eilish, so I showed her Apple's new Vision Pro commercial, and asked her advice for various hair types.
How to minimize muss while preventing hair damage, especially during long Vision Pro sessions? Read Isadora's recommendations below!
For short hair, make sure the headset goes over the back of your hair smoothly and isn’t pushing up any growth patterns in the back.
For bangs, split them in the middle and move them to the sides, instead of crushing them under the headset, or let them rest just on top of the headset.
For long hair, make sure to place the headset going over the hair, after it’s brushed laid down, going with the direction of the hair. Make sure it’s snug but not too tight so that it doesn’t tangle or cause damage.
For curly hair, part the hair where the band of the headset will sit, and pull the top of the hair over the headset band so it doesn’t crease the hair or flatten curls, and will also look natural if you’re on a call, also making sure it’s not too tight, but snug enough to stay put.
Otherwise, for both hair types, if your hair is in a bun, make sure the bun sits high enough or low enough, as to not interfere with the strap, and pull any loose hairs away from the adjustable plastic parts of the headset.
So there you go! Isadora tells me all the actors in the Vision Pro commercial are wearing their hair correctly ("even the woman with curly hair has hers above the strap"), so evidently that's a consideration Tim Cook and company have made.
I'm not surprised: It's fair to say the average Apple early adopter is going to be more concerned about style and presentation than a typical VR user -- especially when Apple's device is called Vision Pro and being marketed for use in office environments. I strongly approve as a Long Hair Haver myself.
Thanks to Isadora (@isadora_hairdesign) for her sage coif commentary -- and who as you might have guessed already, has given me my own best haircuts. (Not a paid endorsement -- I paid her to make it!)
