Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Deborah Lombardo [Harbor Galaxy] is an astonishingly accomplished artist. Her stream is overflowing with one great painting after another. I say painting because her SL screenshots with a texture overlay or two look like they have been painted. It’s impossible to pick just one or three of her “best” pictures because everyone seems the best. I chose “Audacious Playground” because her dress in this image (above) made me think of another artist, Eshi Otawara, and her famous fishhook dress. Folks who joined SL after mesh have no idea the kinds of inventive and glorious clothing we used to wear.

“The Old Shed” is a striking subversion of the gazing from a doorway cliché that I wrote about on Tuesday. Rather than gazing from the doorway out into the world, this woman is gazing from light outside into the darkness of the shed. Her pose is equivocal. There is tension, but is it from apprehension or eagerness? The shed is such a strong cultural idea, from the “trip to the woodshed” threat to the “I saw something nasty in the woodshed” of Cold Comfort Farm to the plot twist in The Divine Comedy’s “Something About the Weekend.” I won’t spoil the surprise on that one. On the other hand, there is the recent appearance of the “she shed” where women enjoy their art, crafts, and privacy, the opposite of the man cave. Somehow, I don’t think this is a she shed.
“The Doorway” returns to the door motif. I love how the light falling on the shed creates this burnt umber color that is echoed in the girl’s hair. With that cloud of reddish hair, the girl makes me think of Little Orphan Annie. I love how rich and velvety her blacks are and how every color and everything revealed in the light feels deliberate.
Deborah Lombardo [Harbor Galaxy] is an artist I have featured before. Her work is amazing. You should follow her to see how the boundaries of screenshot art can be pushed by someone determined to do so.
