Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Matty King’s “It’s a Beautiful War” is a quintessential picture from his stream that flows with one striking portrayal after another of a guy who is a perfect character for a noir film. You know, the stranger who walks into a bar and all the conversation stops as tension builds because you know the bar’s resident tough guy will be compelled to confront him and then back down. And of course, the stranger wasn’t interested in taking over the bar’s toughest customer position, he was just thirsty.

“Show Some Weakness” is Matty’s most popular picture and it’s easy to see why. Again, it has that noir aesthetic with black and white, all the tattoos, piercing, the white undershirt. On top of that, his focus is so intense. If you were being interrogated, you would fold. But he’s not interrogating, he’s seducing, his gaze says you’re fascinating and he’s fascinated. No wonder it’s a favorite. We all love to be interesting to somebody.
“Drug, Sex, and Hate” is a title as noir as it gets. He was inspired by “Red”, a Santino Le Saint song that is something you might add to a noir soundtrack: “I get crazy with the moon rising / Pain comes out to play frightening / Drugs, sex, and hate hiding deep inside my brain / Fighting demons for my sanity.”
I’m not sure why, but when I saw this picture, my first thought was Breathless the film about a guy who wanted to be like Humphrey Bogart, shot a cop, and hides out with an ex and falls for her, wanting her to run away with him, but…go see the film. You know, I think it was the remake that made the connection, reminding me of the original.
Matty King’s photostream is a gorgeous trip through the world of noir. He does a lot of black and white, but he also does some color. Generally, black and white is more arresting, but he does an amazing job of infusing color with that same aesthetic. Color or monochrome, his style is recognizable and consistent. Also easy on the eyes.
