As promised a few months ago, VRChat is now taking sign-ups for the closed beta testers of the virtual world's upcoming iOS app. Though there's a pretty pressing catch -- you need a fairly recent/high-end iOS to join the beta:
We’re also looking for people that aren’t expecting a flawless experience. This is a test, and we’re looking for users that will be okay with a bit of instability, and who will be willing to provide us with feedback on what they like and dislike...
Right now, we’re targeting iOS devices with 6 GB+ of RAM. However, that does not mean we won’t include users that own other devices for testing purposes in the future.
That means an iPhone 12 Pro/Max or a iPad Pro (2nd generation) or later model.
I'm curious to see how the beta tests play out, especially because VRChat's Android app isn't exactly taking off -- though it went free-to-play last December, Google Play's download tracker has it between 100K-500K installs. (From an active user base of some 10 million people.) Then again, it could be that most VRChat users are in Tim Apple's fold.
Also curious to see whether VRChat's iOS app goes open beta before Second Life's iOS app. At this point, they're running neck and neck!
