Primfeed, Social Network / Flickr Alternative for Second Life Users, Gains 8000 Members in First 24 Hours.

Primfeed, a new social media service for Second Life users positioned as an alternative to Flickr after SLers on the photo sharing site experienced a wave of penalties and bannings, just launched.

I just created an account here, and so far, the set-up process is pretty impressive and perfectly optimized for Second Life users in particular: To register, you can enter your SL name (as above), which then sends you an authorization code as a direct message in SL itself.

I'm not the only one. According to Primfeed creator Luke Rowley (read my interview with him here) signs-ups and activity in the first 24 hours of launch have been massive:

While I was ready for some traffic, this is nowhere the level of traffic I was expecting on the day of launch.

Having launched a few websites in my day, I can say 8000 users at launch with no advertising is insanely huge growth. The challenge, of course, is being able to sustain that level of growth and activity on a regular basis.

 

Cajsa's Primfeed account, by the way, is here. The service doesn't have an image embed option (yet), but if growth continues, we'll have decide whether we should expand her weekly column into covering both best images from SL Flickr and Primfeed.
