The Sciopticon magic lantern projector was a seriously steampunk-esque contraption from 1890 that projected a moving image with a series of glass slides on a rotating chassis cylinder.
And now, someone created a working version in Second Life. (Watch it in action above.) It ingeniously uses the existing projector feature in SL to work, simulating classic animations like Muybridge's famous galloping man. (Recently depicted in the Jordan Peele's eerie movie Nope.)
"Essentially it's a SL Projector Light, with a texture attached to it," creator JamesDew explains. "There's a script that cycles through a list of textures, same as the one on the slides. Making sure we timed the rotation of the slide to the right texture shown on the projector is how we got this to work."
Passionate agreement with Barb, who mentioned this is one of the coolest creations recently instantiated in the virtual world. Links to check it out below!
It's now available at the Shotgun | Wild West shopping event until June 6 (i.e. today!): Click here to teleport.
Afterward it'll be in JamesDew's Marketplace shop.
