Hair Fair 2024 is happening in Second Life now until June 16, with proceeds from virtual hair sales benefiting the real life non-profit Wigs for Kids. And while I've seen all kinds of hair styles from the annual fundraiser (here's what it looked like in 2012), there's a new item this year that feels like a first:
An animated hair styling chair.
Yes: There's now an item that captures the social experience of being with others while caring for hair. (Watch above.) It's available now at Hair Fair: Click here to teleport.
It's the concoction of Bars Simpson, who'll be selling it in her mainstore after this week. When she was invited to Hair Fair as a vendor, she wanted to create something for the virtual hairstyle experience she hadn't seen before:
"I just kind of brainstormed what haven't I seen that would be fun for that event," as she tells me. She's scripted it to be a full roleplay experience with multiple animations.
As with other social inventions in the virtual world, you can see whole new kinds of roleplay culture emerging around it.
"A few people said they are going to open salons," Barb tells me, laughing.
Maybe a machinima version of the Barbershop movies next?
