Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake is a new Flickr group, less than a month old, that already has 77 members and 158 pictures. It’s all in service to documenting the pacific beauty of a new sim recreating the stunning beauty of the extraordinary lake in Thailand, a large body of water that seldom is more than a meter in depth. Lotuses can only grow in shallow water, so this lake is filled with lotuses both in real life and Second Life. Its extraordinary beauty is captured by Second Life’s intrepid photographers. NaomiE Renfold captures the lake at sunset with two glorious egrets. Their bright white plumage takes on the golden yellow from the sun as they stand among the magenta petals of the lotus. This such a gorgeous and dramatic picture.

Séb’s picture makes me think he has used an HRD filter to enhance the detail. HDR stands for high dynamic range and an HDR filter can be used to increase the details in the light and dark areas of a picture. The details the human eye can see but are usually lost in photos. We can see better than a camera and an HDR filter tries to bridge that gap a little. If you zoom way in on the picture, you can see the details of the leaves and it seems as though you can see the droplets of water in the small waves lit up by the sun. This makes his picture look as though you could touch it and feel the texture.
Pedro captures one of the statues at the lake. It looks as though this statue has a candle in a small holder in one hand and a fan in the other. I went to college with three sisters whose father was the Thai ambassador and they taught a group of us the Thai candle dance. This makes me think of that, though they held candles in both hands. They had us practice with bowls of water, though, so we tried to avoid spilling and didn’t risk burns. Certainly this statue was captured in the midst of a dance.
Polvere di gesso looks out to the open water finding an austere beauty in the wide horizon, the sweeping sky, and the muted reflections of the islands in the dawn with its hint of mist.
Susann DeCuir reminds us that “Nature is pleased with simplicity.” She adds a texture layer that makes this look like a painting. It’s an expansive view of the lake, encompassing not just the mass of lotuses but the wide open water and several small islands. It is a place to find peace.
Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake is a new group but already full of wonderful pictures. It’s well-moderated. There are no pics from Las Vegas nightclubs or dragons’ lairs. Just gorgeous pictures of a beautiful place. There are pictures of people as well, people enjoying the peace and serenity of the lake.
