I recently shared the top 10 most active metaverse platforms I'm tracking, with Meta's Horizon Worlds trailing at slot #10 with 200,000 monthly active users. I'm now working with Julian Reyes of the Virtual Worlds Museum to chart the top 11 through 20 most popular worlds -- i.e. virtual worlds/metaverse platforms which currently have between 10,000 - 200,000 MAU.
To qualify, a given virtual world has to fit these three basic criterion (along with active usage):
- Immersive virtual worlds with avatars that are not primarily games/MMOs.
- Enables users to build their own world/space and invite friends into it.
- Currently online, out of closed beta, with over 100 active users.
Here's ten likely candidates which might now qualify for status in slots 11 through 20:
- Core
- Decentraland
- OnCyber
- OpenSim (when counting all active grids)
- Resonite
- The Sandbox
- Spatial
- Upland
- VIVERSE
- Voxels (formerly Cryptovoxels)
To be a full-fledged metaverse platform, it also has to be a virtual world which enables integration with external technology and external economy -- I.E. you can run web applications and make real money through its virtual economy. Also, the platform should include plans on its roadmap for scaling up to millions of concurrent users. (We're tracking virtual worlds of both categories!)
Let us know in Comments or on LinkedIn if there's any we're missing from our research!

All of these are relatively dead, or can be perceived as dead.
What all these platforms have in common is that their user ratio to world ratio is like 1:1 to 3:1..
I'd say other than Resonite, which seems to be growing relatively well, though a very insular crowd (which can cause platforms to peak and die) - all the others suffer from "I can't find anyone".
Conversely, I can go to Roblox and make 20 friends in under an hour, if I want to be that energetic, as well as simply 'showing up' gets me friend invites.. soooo...
