Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Jonathan Negru has an amazing album called Historic Imitations in which he recreates photos from history. I featured one of his photos in yesterday’s column. This is a recreation from a photo by Edward Sheriff Curtis taken in 1904 in the collection of Portland Art Museum. He even provides a link to where he created and shot the picture.

“Leap into Freedom” is an imitation of a 1961 photo by Peter Leibing. To stop the flow of East Germans fleeing Soviet rule, a barbed wire barricade was put in place in 1961 and soon replaced by the concrete Berlin Wall. He was the first known East German soldier to flee.
“VJ Day Kiss” is a recreation of the very famous VJ Day in Times Square by Alfred Eisenstaedt. He didn’t get their names and neither did the NY Times photographer who snapped the same kiss from a different angle. Several people have claimed to be subjects of the picture but no one has proven it. It has gained controversy over time as the man apparently did not know the woman, he just ran up and grabbed her without consent. However, Jonathan’s avatar model Amy was kissed voluntarily.
Jonathan Negru has an excellent eye and taste for history, not just in his Historic Inspirations, but in his landscapes. He seeks out historic sims and also uses sepia and black and white to suggest the past. Even his geese seem taken at another time. Such fun.
