Cajsa's Choices: The SL-Based Imagery By "Awesome Fallen" Are Awesome Indeed

Awesome Fallen has one of the most powerful photostreams you will find in Second Life Flickr, heavily post-processing SL screenshots into something transcendent. “On Social Media……” captures the effects social media can have on a person, tightly wound, sharp but internally vacant, with detritus flying too fast to comprehend and understand, leaving us stunned, but also hostile. It’s amazing and immediately, I knew I had to feature her work.

“Fears” is another picture that feels tremendously insightful.  Is she a captive of her fears? Is she looking out toward freedom from fear? Is that woman behind or reflected in the glass, a fellow captive or a captor? The only certainty is that the fractured in the glass is a sign of optimism. The fear is breaking open.

“Regrets…” is the picture Awesome chose to feature. Regret is such a polarizing emotion. Edith Piaf sings Non, Je ne regrette rien, I regret nothing, she claims. Forget the past, move on. This picture shows a woman who is seemingly filled with regret, so much it’s escaping her mouth and eyes. If you look at what writers and thinkers say about regret, they think it is a useless, debilitating emotion, one to leave behind. But isn’t regret an impetus for change? Thoreau certainly thought so, “Make the most of your regrets; never smother your sorrow, but tend and cherish it till it comes to have a separate and integral interest. To regret deeply is to live afresh.” 

Awesome Fallen’s photostream is one that demands contemplation. These are not page-down picks to click a like on without really thinking. These are pictures that challenge us to do more than look, but also to think, the most dangerous thing we can do.
