This machinima by the inimitable Teal Aurelia (read my profile of her ) was created as a fun way of introducing the long-awaited video option on Primfeed, the social media platform for Second Life users. (Short, lower-res clips for free users, up to 10 minutes on 720p for paying subscribers.)
Primfeed was originally launched last June as an alternative for SL users of Flickr, after Flickr policies around advertising irked many in the community, who believed the photo sharing service was being actively hostile to Second Life members. (When I interviewed Flickr's Community Manager, she told me that that's not the case.)
At any rate, Primfeed has since grown into a relatively active platform in its own right. Here's some stats:
-
According to Similarweb (a leading analytics firm), Primfeed.com is now getting over 1 million visits per month. (1.01 million to be exact, up from 842,000 last August.)
-
Primfeed founder/owner Luke Rowley tells me Primfeed now has over 20,000 monthly active users. (I.E. people who at least log on to the site once a month.)
-
More from Rowley: Weekly active users on Primfeed were 12,800 in February.
20,000 MAU may not seem like a lot, but likely represents some of the very most active users among Second Life's 500,000 total MAU base -- certainly among its fashion/lifestyle photographer and blogging subcommunity.
Also notable: Primfeed now gets more traffic than SL shopping site Seraphim (990,000 visits last month according to SimilarWeb), which suggests Primfeed is currently the most visited Second life-focused website not owned by Linden Lab.
But how does Primfeed perform for promoting content? Read on...
Primfeed Stats for Featured Content
Thanks to Luke, I recently experimented with the platform's Featured contents option, where creators can pay to promote/amplify featured posts. I tried this with two New World Notes posts, and the results were within a similar range:
-
8,222-8,777 total impressions in 1 day
-
85-105 clicks on posts in 1 day
-
26-46 clicks on the URL in my post (i.e. New World Notes) in 1 day
These are pretty good results, for impressions! The clickthrough rate is definitely on the lower side, for a social network ad, but NWN is probably going to generate less CTR, since its focus is more on news and culture, rather than specific SL shopping/blogging events that are more in Primfeed's vertical.
So what external sites are Primfeed users clicking through to? Here's SimilarWeb's data:
This is pretty funny: For the last 28 days at least, Primfeed users clicked most often on outbound links that took them to... Facebook and Flickr. Even moreso than to Second Life's website itself! Funny, but not surprising: As with the larger web, social networks tend to behave like Russian nesting dolls.
Speaking of which, I'm on Primfeed here as Hamlet Au, as is NWN's excellent image columnist, Cajsa Lilliehook. We'd both love to expand her Cajsa's Choices column beyond Flickr, but we're waiting on an "embed image" option. However, I'd expect image search and hashtags to arrive before that!
