Cajsa Lilliehook covers the best in virtual world screenshot art and digital painting
Kou’s “485” is a glorious illustration of kawaii aesthetics with the pastel colors, her large eyes and cupid-bow lips, the riotous profusion of paper lanterns and fans, and all the sweet innocence that can possibly fit into 640 by 324 pixels. Everything in this picture is chosen to illustrate her sweet, child-like innocence. But, as with so much in Second Life, there is more than meets the eye.

In 493, Kou presents a completely different iteration of her self. Here she is all-knowing. Look at her eyes, the eyes of knowledge and experience, a bit cynical and a lot wary. Kou’s stream shows how she can reinvent herself. Walt Whitman wrote, “Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)” Don’t we all? And doesn’t Second Life give us the license and space to present all our multitudes, if we wish.
In 483, perhaps she knows too much for she is weeping. She wished people a happy new year with this picture which makes me wonder if she was sad to see 2024 go or sad to see what 2025 would bring. Wherefore the sorrow?
Kou’s stream is rich with wonderful images that evoke all sorts of different elements of her life in Second Life, lolita, kawaii, warrior, innocent, cynic, all in one talented artist. I wrote about her before back in 2022 when I focused on her warrior pictures.
