In case you missed it, a UK company called MetaGravity is developing a Minecraft server enabling up to 100,000 concurrent players -- up to 5,000 in a 100 square meter space. It's part of their effort to showcase the company's Quark engine, which uses "Causal Partitioning" to enable extremely high concurrency in virtual world. So if this Minecraft server project is successful, we'll likely see Quark adopted by other virtual worlds.
Anyway, the MetaGravity team is giving me some early beta access invites, so if you want to be first to try this out (surrounded by tens of thousands of others!), hit me up, an I'll add your e-mail to the list (space permitting):
DM me on Patreon or e-mail me at wjamesau gmail dot com or on Discord at wja_hamlet. (Or however else we're already connected.)
