Next week Friday (i.e. July 11) at 1pm SLT/PST, join me for a live recording of The Fourth Wall, a YouTube podcast (watch below) devoted to Second Life's pro wrestling community (!). I'll be taking on Zuckerberg, crypto bros, and all the other heels out there in a steel cage death match to determine who really makes the Metaverse matter.
To send live questions during the recording, text them through The Fourth Wall's Discord server -- click here to join.
The show's hosts, Paul Slater and BK Tigerfish, fully focused their first season on the SL wrestlers, so I'm face-slammingly honored to be their first non-wrestling guest at the start of season two.
You might be amazed there's an SL community of wrestlers and their fans that's large enough to have their own YouTube show. After all, there's other online fighting games which might seem better suited for melee grappling.
But Paul tells me Second Life has advantages that other platforms don't:
"SL wrestling isn't really about fighting, it's more like a performance art," Paul explains. "We have actual fans who come to the shows and just like in real life, they want to be entertained. There is a lot of preparation that goes into making a show each week. You need to work with your opponent on what you're going to do in the match; if you have a promo, you need to go over that. It's not just, 'Let's get in the ring and fight and see who wins,' you want to do something people want to see and talk about and get them to come back each week."
All of which, come to think of it, is also exactly why real life pro wrestling itself is popular!
And it inevitably meant the wrestlers and fans also needed their own broadcast show:
"With wrestling there's always a storyline that people talk about or pay attention to," as he puts it. "The SL wrestling community is full of tribalism... so one of our main motivations was to create a show to have people from the community on where they could talk about their origin, how they found Second Life, how they found SL wrestling, and just tell their story." And in doing so, dispel some of the conflict in between the fans and their favorite fighters.
